Indonesian textile intellectual property protection

Overview

Efforts to protect the intellectual property of traditional Indonesian textiles have gained momentum in the Sumbawa and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) regions.

In Sumbawa Regency, the local government officially received Communal Intellectual Property (KIK) certificates for 55 Kre Alang weaving motifs. This certification is intended to protect cultural heritage from unauthorized claims and document historical significance. To support the industry, the regency has encouraged civil servants to wear Kre Alang patterns weekly to foster a sustainable market.

Similarly, in East Nusa Tenggara, Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti has advocated for stronger copyright protection for NTT woven fabric motifs. During the Flobamorata Creative Expo 2026, Damayanti emphasized that intellectual property rights are essential for increasing the economic value of local products and helping weavers reach broader markets. This push for protection is part of a larger strategy to develop regional flagship products to bolster the local economy.
