Infant abandonment incidents in Brazil

Overview

Authorities in Brazil are investigating multiple cases of infant abandonment across different states.

In São Paulo, a couple was granted provisional liberty following a custody hearing after being caught in flagrante for abandoning seven-month-old twins in São José dos Campos. The parents admitted to leaving the infants alone to use drugs. The children, found in poor condition by Military Police, were placed under the care of the Guardianship Council while the parents face charges of mistreatment and abandonment of an incapable person.

In separate incidents, a newborn found in an illegal waste disposal area in Cosmópolis, São Paulo, remains in intensive care following surgery for chest and abdominal injuries. Civil Police are investigating this case as an attempted homicide. Additionally, in the Del Castilho region of Rio de Janeiro, a newborn was discovered by a couple and taken to an urgent care unit; police are investigating the circumstances of the abandonment.
