Infant death in Quilmes avocado accident

Overview

A 12-day-old infant, identified as Lucas, died in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, after being struck in the head by a large avocado falling from a tree. The accident occurred near a kindergarten while the child was being held by his mother, Giuliana Gómez.

The impact resulted in multiple skull fractures and internal hemorrhaging. Although the infant underwent emergency surgery at the Sanatorio de la Trinidad, he passed away after several days in intensive care.

The family and local residents have alleged municipal negligence, stating that requests for tree pruning and maintenance had been submitted by the kindergarten since the previous year. While municipal authorities maintained the tree was in good condition, the judiciary has reclassified the investigation from “lesiones culposas” (involuntary injuries) to involuntary manslaughter to determine legal responsibility.
