Infanticide arrest in San Fernando

Overview

Authorities in San Fernando, Venezuela, arrested 38-year-old Yessica Marcelino Ramos Villanueva following the death of her two-day-old son at the Hospital Doctor Pablo Acosta Ortiz.

Douglas Rico, director of the CICPC, reported that the woman, a member of the Pumé indigenous group, made two unsuccessful attempts to kill the newborn while in the recovery area. Medical staff intervened both times; however, during a third attempt while the infant was being fed, Ramos Villanueva caused the child’s death through mechanical asphyxia and airway suffocation. Investigations indicate the motive was that she did not want the child. The suspect has been placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry in Apure state.
