Overview
Infineon and SolarEdge Technologies have expanded their collaboration to develop solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) technology. This initiative is specifically designed to support 800 VDC power architectures within AI and hyperscale data centers.
The partnership addresses engineering difficulties inherent in high-voltage direct-current (DC) distribution. Because DC circuits lack a natural current zero, traditional mechanical breakers are often slow and prone to arcing. The new SSCB solution aims to provide fast fault isolation, interrupting faults within microseconds without the need for mechanical contacts.
Under the agreement, SolarEdge leads the design of the SSCB solution, while Infineon provides silicon carbide (SiC) JFET technology to ensure robust protection. This work builds upon an existing partnership involving SolarEdge’s solid-state transformer (SST) platform, which uses Infineon components to facilitate efficient conversion from medium-voltage grids to DC power.
