Overview

The Canadian federal and provincial governments have initiated major infrastructure and economic development projects in northern British Columbia. Construction has commenced on Phase 1 of the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL), an expansion of the electricity line running from Prince George to Terrace. This project aims to more than double clean, low-cost electricity availability on the West Coast to support industrial developments such as the Ksi Lisims LNG facility and critical mineral mining in the Golden Triangle.

In addition to the energy expansion, the federal government is investing over $11 million through PacifiCan to support ten businesses and organizations. These funds target sectors like advanced manufacturing and forestry to boost productivity and economic diversification. For example, Prince George-based Open Waters Solar is receiving $450,000 to automate manufacturing for impact-resistant solar panels.

The NCTL project is projected to create approximately 10,000 jobs and $10 billion in new economic activity, while potentially reducing annual emissions by up to three million tonnes.
