Infrastructure and road safety projects in Rethymno

Overview

The Crete Regional Committee has approved several infrastructure and safety initiatives for the Rethymno regional unit.

In late August, the committee approved €4 million for supplementary studies regarding the South Road Axis of Southern Crete. These studies focus on the stretch from Rodakino to Agia Galini, including segments in Sellia, Lefkogia, and Akoumia. The funding is intended to finalize technical designs, conduct environmental impact assessments, and complete the design of the remaining road network and supporting local networks.

Following this, in early September, the committee approved two additional road safety improvement projects with a combined budget of €398,520. One project, budgeted at €248,520, targets the Rethymno and Agios Vasileios municipalities, specifically addressing water drainage safety on Provincial Road 3. A second project for the Amari municipality is budgeted at €150,000. Planned works include cleaning ditches, improving storm water drainage, and road re-marking. Vice Regional Governor Maria Lioni noted that these interventions aim to address issues affecting the safety of citizens.
