Infrastructure damage from heavy rainfall in Venezuela
Overview
Heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused widespread infrastructure damage and service disruptions across multiple regions in Venezuela.
In early October, intense precipitation led to the collapse of a section of the Troncal 005 highway in Barinas state, severing a vital connection between Barinas and Táchira used for distributing food and fuel. In Caracas, fallen trees blocked sections of the Gran Cacique Guaicaipuro highway, while landslides in Mérida temporarily isolated rural areas by blocking the Trans-Andean highway.
By October 4, the impact extended to Zulia state, where storms damaged approximately 770 homes and severely affected the electrical grid. The weather impacted 39 electrical distribution circuits, resulting in a loss of roughly 431 megawatts of power. Local authorities and utility crews have been deployed to address hundreds of electrical faults, clear debris, and restore services in the Zulia metropolitan area.
