Infrastructure development in Assam

Infrastructure development in Assam continues through major highway, rural connectivity, and administrative projects. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a Rs 8,970.20 crore project for a 135.871-km, four-lane access-controlled Guwahati-Tezpur corridor on National Highway 15. Developed under a Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) toll model, the corridor will include five major bypasses, 15 large bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, an elephant underpass, and 46 additional underpasses. It also features a 4.9-km Emergency Landing Facility on the Tezpur bypass coordinated with the Indian Air Force.

To expand rural connectivity, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the launch of Asom Mala 4.0, a Rs 10,000-crore initiative to develop approximately 800 km of roads linking remote areas to economic and commercial centers. Additionally, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Rs 81.2-crore Integrated District Commissioner’s Office Building for Kamrup Metropolitan in Guwahati, which includes a 350-kilowatt solar power system.

Cultural and scientific infrastructure is also advancing. An additional Rs 100 crore has been allocated to expand the Guwahati Science City in Sonapur, supporting a digital panorama, convention centre, musical fountain, and improved parking, with completion expected by March 2027. Regarding the Zubeen Khetra memorial site in Komarkuchi, authorities have been directed to complete the boundary wall by late 2026 to facilitate the construction of a museum and open-air theatre.

In the ‘Assam Budget 2026’, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant expansion of these efforts, with the state government planning to invest over 55,000 crore rupees in infrastructure. This major initiative focuses on constructing highways, bridges, and tunnels to reduce travel distances, accelerate economic growth, and support the ‘Developed Assam’ vision.
