Infrastructure project completion protests
Overview
Residents in various regions have initiated protests regarding the suspension or incompletion of road construction projects.
In Paraguay, inhabitants of Caacupé and Piribebuy have conducted intermittent road closures to protest the halt of a 16-kilometer asphalt paving project. Demonstrators claim that the contractor, Iniciativas Constructivas SA, began withdrawing machinery from the site, which locals attribute to a lack of promised disbursements from the Ministry of Public Works and Communications. This follows previous reassurances of project deadlines from high-level government officials.
In the Pocollay district of Tacna, Peru, residents from nine associations protested at the Regional Government of Tacna to demand the completion of Los Productores Avenue. Protesters cited traffic difficulties, restricted transport access, and increased accident risks. Local leaders reported that a search of the Ministry of Economy and Finance portal indicated no budget was allocated for the project this year. While a meeting with government officials was scheduled, it was suspended due to the absence of a representative from the contracting company.
In Tacna, Mayor Demetrio Cutipa has called for a public tender for the Quiñones Plaza improvement project, valued at approximately 7.27 million soles, amid local opposition regarding unfinished municipal projects.
