Insecurity and security response in Nigeria

Overview

In response to escalating banditry, terrorism, and violent crime, leaders in northern Nigeria established a Security Trust Fund. Addressing criticisms from opposition politicians, Usman stated, “Bandits have no political party. They do not ask whether their victims are APC, PDP or members of any other party before they attack.”

Beyond regional security, officials in Abuja have linked national stability to anti-corruption reforms. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, argued that corruption undermines public trust and advocated for digitalizing government processes to prevent abuse.

Civil society organizations continue to call for national unity. In Abuja, a coalition urged the public to support security agencies and called for an end to the ‘politicization of security challenges.’ Meanwhile, in the Niger Delta, groups commended Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited for reducing violence and oil theft while providing livelihoods for local youths through pipeline surveillance.
