Insurgency and security operations in Manipur

Overview

Security forces in Manipur have intensified operations against insurgent groups, resulting in the seizure of significant weapon caches and the arrest of multiple militants. In Ukhrul district, the Assam Rifles and state police apprehended five suspected members of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), part of the G-5 conglomerate. Although the UNLF signed a peace agreement in 2023, officials noted that certain factions remain active in extortion and recruitment.

In Imphal West, police arrested a cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party (MFL), seizing sophisticated weaponry including M4 and AK-56 rifles, a light machine gun, and explosives. Joint operations by the Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) also recovered additional ammunition along the Kangpokpi-Tamenglong axis.

In response to the regional scenario, top security officials from the Assam Rifles and the CRPF conducted high-level reviews to strengthen the security grid. Assam Rifles Director General Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera visited several garrisons to emphasize area domination and coordination with civil authorities. Meanwhile, the CRPF and state police arrested 17 suspected militants from two Kuki outfits who were allegedly impersonating registered cadres under the 2008 Suspension of Operations agreement.
