Inter Milan player availability and Argentina injury crisis

Overview

Following international duty with Argentina, Inter Milan players faced varying availability. Defender Tomás Palacios experienced a career resurgence through a loan at Estudiantes, where he has made 30 appearances and recently made his official debut for the Argentina national team. Striker Lautaro Martínez returned to Milan with significant fatigue after traveling over 11,000 kilometers, leaving him with only 48 hours to prepare for a fixture against Parma.

Martínez subsequently suffered a left hamstring muscle strain in his left thigh flexors during a Champions League match against Club Brugge. Medical staff have opted for a conservative recovery approach, meaning he is expected to return only after the mid-November international break. His absence is expected to impact at least seven matches, including Serie A fixtures against Bologna, Fiorentina, Venezia, Milan, and Como, as well as Champions League clashes against Shakhtar Donetsk and Feyenoord. Following a recent victory against Bologna, Martínez expressed his frustration on Instagram, stating, “I miss you so much.” To fill the offensive void, Inter Milan may rely on players such as Marcus Thuram, Pio Esposito, Ange-Yoan Bonny, Alexis Sanchez, or Marko Arnautovic.

The injury raises concerns for the Argentina national team as they enter the post-Lionel Messi era. Manager Lionel Scaloni faces a growing injury crisis ahead of November friendlies against Uruguay and Costa Rica. In addition to Martínez, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is sidelined for six weeks following emergency surgery for a fractured jaw. Defensive concerns also include Cristian Romero, who is dealing with an adductor strain but is expected to return by late October, while Lisandro Martínez faced a minor setback but is expected to be available for club fixtures.
