Internal reform disputes within SDSM

The Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) is experiencing internal conflict driven by the ‘12:05’ platform, a group of current and former officials seeking structural reforms. The movement, which includes figures such as Igor Ivanovski and Andrej Petrov, argues that the party requires leadership changes and organizational restructuring to prevent further electoral decline.

Andrej Petrov specifically noted that the party’s recent local election performance, securing approximately 125,000 votes, represents a significant drop from the 370,000 votes achieved in 2011. Reformers have proposed measures such as open candidate lists and a single electoral unit to revitalize the opposition.

Party leader Venko Filipče has rejected these demands, characterizing the platform participants as ‘putschists’ and ‘mercenaries’ allegedly working for rival leader Hristijan Mickoski to fragment the opposition. While leadership maintains the movement is a distraction from national issues, reformers are moving toward formalizing their demands.

Professor Andrej Petrov recently announced that initiators of the new political platform intend to deliver a formal plan to the SDSM leadership this week. This document is intended to outline a specific dynamic for continuing internal processes and addressing the party’s current state. During a television appearance, Petrov defended the initiative against claims that it is an informal or undemocratic ‘hotel coalition’, arguing that meeting in public venues is a standard practice and criticizing those who communicate political stances from abroad.
