Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani died on 12 July 2026 (age 74). Qatar announced a four‑day mourning period (13‑16 July) with flags at half‑mast and public offices closed until 19 July. Prime Minister Modi praised the late emir for deepening India‑Qatar ties. On 16 July Modi spoke by phone with Emir Tamim, posted condolences on social media, and reiterated the strategic partnership while the one‑day national mourning continued.

The former emir’s two‑decade rule (1995‑2013) oversaw Qatar’s rapid transformation into a global energy and media power. He leveraged the North Field gas reserves to make Qatar a leading LNG exporter, launched Al Jazeera in 1996, and promoted education initiatives such as Doha Academy and collaborations with Mauritius. His death is viewed as the end of a pivotal era that reshaped Qatar’s economic and diplomatic standing worldwide.
