International Day of Rural Women commemorations

Overview

Commemorations for the International Day of Rural Women took place across several countries, including Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. Events focused on honoring women’s contributions to agriculture, culture, and community stability through photographic exhibitions, recognition ceremonies, and collaborative work sessions aimed at strengthening local governance and food security.

In Mexico, specific activities were held in Silao and Baja California Sur to acknowledge the economic and cultural impact of women. In Ascensión, Chihuahua, municipal president Ivonne de la Hoya Venzor participated in harvesting activities at Rancho Rarámuri to mark the day. Organized by the Municipal Women’s Institute, the event included the distribution of state-provided food supplies and private-sector donated blankets to female heads of households. Medical personnel also established a vaccination station to provide influenza shots to rural workers and their families.

In Chile’s Maule region, more than 200 women gathered in Talca for an event organized by INDAP and the Rural Women’s Table. Regional authorities and INDAP national director Antonella Pecchenino highlighted the essential productive and familial roles of these women. Governor Pedro Pablo Álvarez-Salamanca noted the potential for local peasant entrepreneurship, such as flower production in Longaví, to reach international markets. The commemoration featured a peasant market and highlighted programs funded by the FNDR and executed by INDAP, which support areas such as irrigation, renewable energies, and commercialization to strengthen economic autonomy.
