International folk dance festivals in Greece

Overview

The 3rd International Folk Dance Festival, ‘Symposium International’, was held in Crete, specifically in Heraklion and Chania. The event featured over 350 dancers from Greece and various other nations, including Cyprus, the Netherlands, Germany, and France.

A significant aspect of the festival was the record participation of more than 200 dancers from Turkey, who performed both Turkish traditions and Greek dances. Organizers noted the festival’s goal to use music and dance as a “universal language to foster communication and reconciliation between peoples,” particularly regarding Greek-Turkish relations.

By the conclusion of the festivities, the festival in Crete drew approximately 1,500 spectators and included a Peace and Peoples parade. Performances took place in Protopachia and Chania, where a symbolic hasapiko dance was performed at the Chania Lighthouse in memory of a festival follower from Jordan.
