International investigations of Israel's Ben‑Gvir

Overview

In early June 2026 Italian prosecutors opened a criminal inquiry into National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir after a video showed him mocking detained Global Sumud Flotilla activists. The probe alleges torture, kidnapping and war‑crimes involving Italian and other nationals, sparking diplomatic tension between Rome and Tel Aviv and prompting calls for EU sanctions. Later that month a Belgian human‑rights group filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice, accusing Ben‑Gvir of war crimes and genocide tied to systematic abuse of Palestinian prisoners from October 2023 to August 2025. The Hind Rajab Foundation also requested his arrest upon his expected arrival in New York for a UN police chiefs summit, alleging direct incitement of genocide, orders to torture and the deaths of dozens of detainees, including U.S. citizens. U.S. Representative Jake Rom called the planned visit a test of America’s commitment to international law. On 28 June Hind Rajab filed a separate complaint detailing systematic torture, sexual violence and forced displacement that caused at least 46 Palestinian prisoner deaths, demanding that the United States bar Ben‑Gvir from leaving the country while investigations proceed. On 30 June the foundation expanded its campaign by petitioning Lithuania’s Constitutional Court to investigate an Israeli dental student for alleged war crimes in Gaza. On 3 July, amid coordinated protests by progressive Jewish and left‑wing groups and an open letter urging New York Attorney General Letitia James to seek war‑crimes charges, Ben‑Gvir cancelled his planned New York trip, citing intense civil‑society pressure and the risk of arrest. The cancellation followed a second aborted U.S. visit after visa difficulties and similar activist pressure. European governments, including France, Italy and Spain, have imposed travel bans or called for sanctions against Ben‑Gvir, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for other Israeli officials over Gaza‑related crimes.
