International reconstruction efforts in Benghazi

Overview

International efforts to support reconstruction in Benghazi have expanded through various diplomatic and commercial channels. In early September, the second Libyan-American Development and Reconstruction Forum opened in Benghazi, where Libyan officials and American business representatives discussed investments in infrastructure and public services. Belgasem Khalifa Haftar, Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, emphasized the need to move toward practical programs and knowledge transfer.

Following this, the Italian-Libyan Chamber of Commerce organized a specialized delegation to Benghazi for site inspections. This mission, involving several engineering and construction firms, aims to work with the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund to focus on the restoration of Benghazi’s historic center. The initiative specifically targets the preservation of architectural identity in areas like the Al-Sabri district, which contains architecture of Italian origin damaged during recent conflicts.
