International solar energy aid for Cuba
Overview
International solidarity movements have launched initiatives to provide solar energy equipment to Cuba to address electricity needs.
In late September, the Italian movement Ruta a Cuba, supported by various political organizations and civil society groups, delivered a shipment of solar panels to cultural institutions in Havana. Under the initiative ‘Energía para la Vida, encendamos la luz en Cuba’, the photovoltaic systems were intended to support educational, hospital, and cultural facilities. Martha Figueredo, president of the National Council of Houses of Culture, noted the installation would aid cultural development in both community and institutional settings.
By mid-October, the Argentine Solidarity Movement (MASCuba) expanded its ‘Estamos con Cuba’ campaign. Following the distribution of 45 solar kits to families with electro-dependent children, the movement began fundraising for larger 10 Kwh and 20 Kwh solar energy units. These systems are designated for the Enrique Cabrera National Hospital in Havana to ensure electricity for vital medical departments. The Argentine campaign includes various artistic and political-cultural events to raise funds, framed as a gesture of gratitude for Cuba’s historical medical and educational contributions.
