Investigators claim a criminal organization, allegedly led by businessman Ricardo Magro, used shell companies and ‘laranjas’ to launder money and cover Castro’s personal expenses. The probe continues to focus on potential fraud regarding environmental licenses for the refinery, suggesting they were granted in violation of technical guidelines. While Castro’s defense maintains that all administrative acts were legal and denies all allegations of corruption and money laundering, the Refit group faces a separate legal crisis. The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro has decreed the bankruptcy of the Refit group companies, citing tax liabilities that have reached approximately R$ 25.7 billion.
