Investigation into Hernán Casciari and Orsai Audiovisuales

Overview

Argentine writer Hernán Casciari and his company, Orsai Audiovisuales, remain under criminal investigation by the Buenos Aires judiciary following a complaint filed by 18 producer-partners. The complainants allege fraud and fraudulent administration regarding a collective financing model used for several audiovisual projects between 2020 and 2024.

Investors, who contributed amounts ranging from USD 50 to USD 3,000, claim they were promised significant returns that failed to materialize. Many reported receiving less than 3% of their capital or nothing at all. Specific projects cited in the legal filing include ‘La muerte de un comediante’, ‘La Uruguaya’, ‘Canelones’, and the documentary ‘D.A.M.’. Investors have further questioned the lack of transparency, noting they received general spreadsheets but lacked the detailed invoices, contracts, or receipts necessary to verify expenditures.

The legal proceedings, involving Criminal Court No. 34 and Prosecution No. 16, address allegations of opaque fund management and the unauthorized transfer of money between different productions. High-profile figures, including former footballer José Chatruc, have also been identified as victims of the investment scheme.

Casciari has denied any premeditated intent to defraud, stating, “A person who scams... acts with premeditation.” He attributes the situation to management errors and communication failures rather than criminal intent. To support his defense, he released a QR code containing expense reports and invoices for projects conducted between 2021 and 2025. Additionally, actress Verónica Llinás, who participated in the film ‘Canelones’, has distanced herself from the administrative side, stating she had no involvement in financial management.
