Investigation into Nancy Guthrie disappearance

Overview

The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie remains an active investigation. Authorities believe she was abducted from her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, Arizona, on January 31 or February 1. Investigators have reviewed doorbell camera footage of a masked suspect or an individual tampering with a camera at the residence, and have conducted DNA testing, but no arrests have been made.

NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie has navigated the emotional toll of the investigation, describing the experience as “profound trauma.” Following a two-week absence, Guthrie returned to the ‘Today’ show on September 8, where she made a rare on-air mention of her mother’s Irish heritage. On September 15, Guthrie renewed her public plea for information, noting that the family seeks answers to provide her with a ‘proper goodbye’. This plea followed a tribute from actress Allison Janney during the Emmy Awards.

Federal investigators are examining digital evidence, including surveillance footage of an armed individual tampering with a front door camera and reports of technical disruptions or internet outages on the night of the disappearance. While a former FBI agent suggested that evidence found at the scene, such as blood and unconsumed medication, indicates Nancy may no longer be alive, the case remains an active missing-person investigation.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has cleared Savannah Guthrie and her family of any involvement, describing them as “victims in this case.” While ransom notes have been received, investigators have characterized them as dead ends. Recently, social media attention has focused on unverified video of Guthrie’s son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, during an attempted interview, though no connection to the disappearance has been established.
