Investigation into pediatric death in Milan hospitals
Overview
Milan prosecutors have opened a manslaughter investigation following the death of a two-year-old girl, Anastasia, at the Buzzi Pediatric Hospital. The child was transferred from Rho hospital after presenting with severe abdominal pain and nausea, during which time she suffered a cardiac arrest.
Following a formal complaint by the child’s parents, Prosecutor Rosaria Stagnaro opened a file for manslaughter against unknown persons. The Carabinieri NAS (Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit) have seized medical records to assist in reconstructing the timeline of the child’s deterioration. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death and whether medical negligence occurred.
In response to the incident, Lombardy Welfare Councilor Guido Bertolaso called for a review of procedures, and the ATS Metropolitan City of Milan established a verification commission to examine the clinical path taken by the child.
