Investigation into Portuguese Minister Luís Neves

Portuguese Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves is the subject of multiple investigations and audits concerning transparency and asset declarations. The controversy initially centered on allegations that Neves failed to declare his wife’s vehicles to the Transparency Entity, alongside questions regarding his use of high-end official vehicles and security personnel.

President António José Seguro has called for a swift investigation, stating that sovereignty organs must ‘assume its responsibility’. In response to the allegations, Neves maintained that certain vehicles used were service vehicles held under legal loan agreements.

As the situation progressed, the scope of scrutiny expanded to include three Public Ministry inquiries, a Court of Auditors process, and an administrative investigation, some of which relate to his previous tenure as head of the Judiciary Police. These inquiries include investigations into property licensing in Odemira. Meanwhile, the Transparency Entity (EpT) has acknowledged difficulties in oversight due to staffing shortages and a lack of clear mandates regarding which officials must submit mandatory declarations.
