Investigation into Waberer’s state financing

Overview

Minister of Economy and Energy István Kapitány filed a report against unknown perpetrators following an audit of state financial institutions. The report concerns the state financing of the logistics company Waberer’s, specifically involving two bond transactions through the Magyar Fejlesztési Bank (MFB) totaling approximately 77 billion forints.

Minister Kapitány alleged that during a 2026 transaction, the MFB provided financing at a rate below its own cost, potentially creating a budgetary burden of up to 10 billion forints via the interest equalization system. The Minister noted that István Tiborcz had assumed ownership control over Waberer’s by the time of the 2026 transaction.

Authorities have since launched a criminal investigation into potential breach of trust and abuse of office. The probe is examining the roles of the MFB, Eximbank, and MBH Bank in financing the company’s transactions following its 2023 acquisition by Tiborcz. Investigators are reviewing the terms of these loans and their subsequent impact on the state budget.
