Investigation and suspension of Ignacio Zaragoza Academy

The Academia Militarizada Ignacio Zaragoza (AMIZ) in Puebla, Mexico, is facing regulatory action following investigations into its educational model and allegations of student mistreatment.

On 5 August, the State Education Secretariat (SEP) attempted surveillance visits to verify compliance and protect students' rights, but the inspection was suspended after demonstrators blocked access. Protesters, including parents and alumni, rallied to prevent the academy’s closure, asserting that while punishments involve exercise and detention, they do not constitute physical abuse. The academy’s legal representative denied officials entry, citing accreditation issues and delays.

By 11 August, Puebla education authorities reported that a review of official records found no formal complaints from students regarding physical mistreatment, despite social media reports and testimonies from former students. While the institution’s preschool, primary, and secondary levels were reportedly compliant, authorities were specifically scrutinizing the high school level for its militarized character, as federal guidelines prohibit using military discipline as an operational modality.

On 25 August, the Puebla SEP temporarily suspended primary education services at the academy due to administrative irregularities and concerns regarding its educational model. The institution has until 31 August to address official observations, including a recommendation to relocate primary classrooms to mitigate risks. Additionally, federal authorities filed a complaint with the Fiscalía General de la República regarding the unauthorized use of military uniforms, insignia, and other elements belonging to the Armed Forces. State Secretary of Education Manuel Viveros stated the academy may resume classes if it complies with all observations and removes the concept of militarized education.
