Overview
Karen de Moura Tanaka Mori, known as ‘Japa do PCC’, is under investigation in São Paulo for alleged money laundering and involvement with the criminal organization Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC). Authorities allege Mori used businesses in the beauty, real estate, and family-owned sectors to conceal proceeds from drug trafficking. During her arrest, investigators seized significant amounts of cash in Reais and US Dollars, as well as luxury vehicles.
Initially, a São Paulo judge, Paula Regina Schempf Cattan, suspended Mori’s electronic ankle monitor and nighttime house arrest on the condition that she surrender her passport. Following the resolution of legal questions regarding the location of the passport, the Court of Justice authorized the removal of the electronic monitor and the end of nighttime house arrest.
Mori remains subject to judicial constraints, including a prohibition on leaving the state of São Paulo without prior authorization and a requirement to report to court monthly.
