IPOB election boycott threats in Nigeria

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has escalated its demands regarding the legal status of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Initially, the group issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Federal Government, accusing officials of deliberately delaying appellate proceedings by failing to file a respondent’s brief. IPOB warned that failure to hear Kanu’s appeal would lead to a mobilization to boycott the 2027 general elections in the South-East and other areas of Biafraland. Mazi Chris Nwaogu, representing the organization’s Directorate of State, stated, “A government that cannot face its Court of Appeal has no right to demand our votes.”

Following this, the group reinforced its stance, stating that a total boycott of upcoming elections remains a promise contingent upon Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release or the hearing of his appeal. Alongside these political demands, the organization has maintained its internal activities, including fundraising for the welfare and legal expenses of Kanu and other detainees, as well as scheduling its annual Day of Atonement.
