Iran vehicle import and transit regulations
Overview
The Iran Customs Administration has extended the temporary import period for passenger vehicles until late December. This extension applies to Iranians living abroad, travelers using international Carnet de Passages, and certain foreign investors. To streamline the process, local and provincial customs managers have been granted authority to approve two-month extensions directly, bypassing the need for central authorization from Tehran.
Separately, authorities have announced that vehicles from Iran’s free zones are permitted to travel throughout the country for a maximum of two months per year via temporary transit plates. While travel for vehicles from Kish and Qeshm was authorized through September, the status for Chabahar vehicles remains subject to local inquiry. Certain restricted categories, such as American racing cars, are exempt from these specific regulations. Additionally, officials are developing a plan to link traffic scheme debts to a previous owner’s national ID to ensure new owners are not held liable for prior unpaid fines.
