Overview

In early August, thousands of Iranian pilgrims crossed the al‑Zurbatiyah border into Iraq for Arbaeen, the first such movement since the U.S.–Israeli strike on Iran on 28 February. Many wore black and carried portraits of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; some stamped a portrait of U.S. President Donald Trump, raised fists or made victory signs. The crossing occurred hours after fresh U.S.–Saudi airstrikes killed 20 militants, including five Iranians, in seven Iraqi provinces. Amir, a 55‑year‑old pick‑up driver, said the war had changed the atmosphere but the crowd persisted. Earlier in the month, Khamenei’s remains were transferred to Karbala and Najaf for a six‑day funeral procession.

Iran’s Islamic Propaganda Office reported 150 caravans from five provinces and three foreign countries, with new signage along the “Path of Hussein” and red flags bearing “Ya Latharat al‑Hussain wa Abna’ al‑Hussain.” Domestic routes were outlined through Tehran’s squares and towns, emphasizing resistance and unity.

To manage the surge, Deputy police chief Siawash Mohibi announced temporary traffic limits from 11 to 17 Mordad, banning motorcycles on the Karaj‑Chalus, Haraz, Firuzkuh and Tehran‑Semnan‑Mashhad corridors, restricting trucks and trailers, and closing the Tehran‑North‑to‑Chalus highway at the Zanguleh bridge. Officials noted that more than 3.2 million pilgrims have crossed Iran’s six main borders, with 724 000 entering in the last 72 hours via Mehran, and about 1 150 buses at Shahid Raisi terminal moving roughly 170 000 travelers. Around 1.1 million Iranian pilgrims remain in Iraq after the pilgrimage.
