Iraq as Launchpad for Drone Attacks on Saudi Arabia

Entities: Iraq · Saudi Arabia · Kingdom of Saudi Arabia · Republic of Iraq · Iran‑backed militias

Overview

In late July 2026, Iraqi officials said they had detained operatives they alleged were acting for Ukraine and pledged investigations into unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Iraqi soil against Saudi Arabia. The same week, Saudi authorities reported a series of drone strikes on oil installations in Riyadh and the Eastern Province, attributing the attacks to Iran‑linked militias operating from Iraq. Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed several of the drones.

Bahrain’s foreign ministry condemned the strikes as violations of the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolution 2817, urging Iraq to prevent its territory from being used for such operations. The Arab Parliament, together with Qatar, Egypt and Pakistan, issued parallel denunciations. The Gulf Cooperation Council expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and pledged support for any lawful response.

Regional partners—including Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt and Pakistan—continue to pressure Iraq to cease allowing its territory to serve as a launchpad, highlighting an escalating security and diplomatic crisis in the Gulf.
