Iraqi security response to IRGC-linked drone cells

Overview

Iraqi security forces have identified a tactical shift among groups linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These groups have transitioned from large, visible armed factions to small, decentralized cells of five to ten individuals to evade detection by government and American authorities. These cells reportedly use civilian vehicles and lack military insignia to facilitate the movement of drones for strikes that have previously targeted Erbil and neighboring countries.

In response to these threats, the Iraqi government has intensified security crackdowns. Authorities have dismantled drone networks planning attacks and seized 49 drones. The Ministry of Interior also closed 71 locations falsely claiming affiliation with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and shut down 119 weapons shops. Major General Miqdad Miri noted that unauthorized drone activity may be prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws as part of a broader state effort to bring all armed activity under government control by 2030.
