Isar Aerospace Spectrum rocket launch success

Overview

On September 5, 2026, German company Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum two-stage rocket from the Andøya Spaceport in Norway. The ‘Forward and Upward’ mission achieved a significant milestone by placing commercial payloads into low Earth orbit, marking the first time a private European company has achieved an orbital launch from continental Europe.

The Spectrum rocket reached an elliptical orbit within seven minutes before performing a circularization burn. It successfully deployed five commercial CubeSats and one educational nanosatellite, the Slovenian Trisat-S, developed through a collaboration between the University of Maribor and Skylabs. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher described the launch as ‘historic,’ noting it as a step toward a more autonomous European launch services sector.

This success follows a failed attempt in March 2025, when a ventilation valve malfunction caused the rocket to crash 30 seconds after liftoff. The successful mission is part of the European Space Agency’s Boost! program and the European Launcher Challenge, aimed at increasing Europe's sovereign access to space. CEO and Co-Founder Daniel Metzler stated that the success provides a sovereign alternative for commercial and institutional customers to reduce reliance on external providers.

Following this achievement, Isar Aerospace has secured a second launch contract with Astroscale Japan Inc. to deploy the ADRAS-J2 debris removal spacecraft between 2027 and 2028 as part of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Commercial Removal of Debris Demonstration project.
