Israel-Hamas conflict and ceasefire implementation
Overview
Hamas has condemned recent Israeli military operations in Gaza, specifically targeting the El-Ketibe region of western Gaza and Gaza City. In the El-Ketibe strike, Hamas accused Israeli special forces of using drones and artillery in a heavily populated area of displaced Palestinians, calling the action a “deliberate disregard for civilian lives.”
Following subsequent strikes in Gaza City, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, Director of Al-Shifa Hospital, reported three deaths and eight injuries. Hamas has consulted with mediators and Nickolay Mladenov, the Peace Council High Representative for Gaza, to urge a halt to the attacks.
While a ceasefire agreement was reached in October 2025 through mediation by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and Turkey, full implementation is stalled. Disagreements continue regarding the sequence of peace requirements: Israel demands the disarmament of Hamas before further troop withdrawals, whereas Hamas requires a cessation of attacks, troop withdrawal, and the fulfillment of humanitarian aid requirements as prerequisites.
