Israel-Hamas Gaza conflict escalation

Entities: Benjamin Netanyahu · Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu · State of Israel · Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir · Hamas

Overview

In early August 2026, Hamas accused Israel of deliberately escalating its military campaign in Gaza, blaming the attacks for killing dozens of Palestinians and calling them war crimes. The group said the renewed violence threatened any U.S.-mediated ceasefire and urged mediators to hold Israel accountable.

A few days later, Israel’s military intensified its offensive, with the IDF chief stating the operation had significantly weakened Hamas and would prevent future attacks. At the same time, Israel faced growing diplomatic isolation as public opinion shifted abroad and the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, further limiting Israel’s international partnerships.
