Israel security concerns along the Gaza border

Security observers along the Gaza envelope have reported increased activity from Hamas militants and suspicious individuals, noting that such movements mirror conditions seen prior to the October 7 attacks. Observers expressed frustration regarding a rigid hierarchy for obtaining firing authorization, which they claim prevents physical intervention against suspicious activities like weapon handling or digging near the border. While the Prime Minister’s Office denied that political leadership is restricting military forces, field personnel reported a sense of helplessness due to orders from higher command levels.

Following these reports, the October Council published a report titled ‘Strategic Warning: Failure 2026,’ which warns that Israel is repeating security patterns and failures that preceded the October 7 massacre. The report highlights seven warning signs, including the rebuilding of Hamas strength and increased strain on military manpower. A key finding is the existence of a ‘barrier of fear’ within the security establishment, where officials and soldiers are reportedly reluctant to voice concerns due to fears of political consequences or career retaliation.
