Israeli strikes on Gaza mosques

Entities: Hamas · Al‑Muttaqin Mosque · Palestinian displaced families · International Stabilization Force · Gaza City

Overview

In late July 2026 Israeli air strikes demolished two mosques in the Gaza Strip. On 28 July a strike on the Al‑Muttaqin Mosque in central Gaza City reduced the building to rubble, destroyed nearby tents sheltering displaced families and left at least one Palestinian dead with more than a dozen injured, rendering hundreds homeless. The same day a separate airstrike hit the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing one civilian and wounding at least 20. Israel’s security cabinet approved the first entry of an International Stabilization Force under a U.S.-brokered cease‑fire that began in October 2025.

The following day the Israel Defense Forces said a strike hit a mosque in northern Gaza, claiming the site stored Hamas weapons. Israeli officials reported warning civilians in advance; French agency footage showed flames, thick smoke and evacuations before the explosion. The mosque was completely destroyed. Gaza’s director of religious affairs, Amir Abu al‑Amraeen, condemned the demolition and called for international protection of holy sites.

Concurrent West Bank incidents included settler arson in Abu Najim near Bethlehem and a military order seizing about 200 dunams in the Jenin governorate. UNESCO reported damage to 164 cultural sites in Gaza since the war began, including 14 religious structures. The events illustrate ongoing heavy Israeli military activity, the targeting of religious sites under security pretexts, and widening humanitarian and diplomatic concerns.
