Israeli demolitions in Masafer Yatta West Bank

Overview

Israeli authorities have conducted demolition operations in the Masafer Yatta region of the southern West Bank, targeting Palestinian villages.

On September 2, the village of Al Tuban was demolished under military escort. The operation destroyed 21 homes, agricultural fields, livestock enclosures, and essential infrastructure such as water systems and electrical cables. This event was noted as the 66th village demolished in the area since October 7, 2023. The destruction left nearly 100 people, including 28 children, without access to food, water, or housing.

Following this, Israeli forces carried out an unannounced demolition in the village of Khirbet al-Tabban. The operation, which reportedly lasted several hours, destroyed homes belonging to 12 families, animal shelters, and water infrastructure, including rainwater collection wells and tanks. This left approximately 70 residents homeless, with reports that personal belongings were crushed during the process. Nidal Younis, head of the Masafer Yatta Council, described the action as the “erasure of this village from existence.”

Masafer Yatta has been designated as a military training zone by Israel since the 1980s. Although the Israeli High Court rejected Palestinian petitions to remain on the land in 2022, local leaders claim genuine military exercises in the area are rare and suggest the designation is used to pressure residents to leave. The United Nations has noted that violence and displacement in the West Bank have reached record levels since the conflict in Gaza began in October 2023.
