Israeli soldier suicides rise amid Gaza war

Overview

By mid-August 2026, the IDF’s suicide count had risen to 17 for the year, the highest in 15 years. On 1 August, the Palestinian health ministry reported 18 civilian deaths and 35 injuries in Gaza, bringing the civilian death toll since the 10 October 2025 cease-fire to 1,250. Turkish officials, including Burhanettin Duran and AK Party spokesperson Ömer Çelik, condemned the strikes as part of a “genocide network.” The same day, Israeli media confirmed a reserve soldier’s suicide near Birüssebi, raising the year-to-date total to 17.

On 6 August, the IDF detailed that two female soldiers—one from the Bardelas Battalion on the Egypt-Israel border and another in military intelligence at Glilot—had died by suicide in late July, bringing the count of serving-personnel suicides to 16. Military police opened investigations into both cases, and the defense ministry noted that at least nine former active-duty soldiers and reservists have also taken their own lives after leaving service.

On 16 August, the IDF confirmed it is investigating the suicide of 24-year-old reserve soldier Oriel Molto Gitahon. Although not on active duty at the time of his death, preliminary assessments suggest a potential link to his previous combat service in the northern Gaza Strip in 2024. The IDF has offered the family assistance in applying to have his death recognized as “death due to service.” Analysts and medical experts continue to link the surge in suicides to the psychological strain and PTSD resulting from prolonged, multi-front warfare, prompting intensified domestic calls for expanded mental-health support.
