Overview
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality approved a plan to redesign the Kadıköy Meydanı area and reduce bus traffic in the waterfront square. An initial proposal announced on 30 July 2026 called for moving 13 IETT bus lines from the Kadıköy Rıhtım platforms to the Uzunçayır transfer hub, cutting bus traffic in the square by roughly 30 % and encouraging rail‑based travel.
Two days later, on 1 August 2026, the municipality expanded the scheme under the Kadıköy Meydanı Yayalaştırma Project. The revised plan shifted 26 bus lines—accounting for 2,461 daily trips—to the Uzunçayır platform zone. Nine routes were fully discontinued, while others were shortened, extended to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, or rerouted through new SM lines serving Sultanbeyli and Sancaktepe. The broader changes aim to lower traffic density, enlarge pedestrian space, and improve connections to metro, Metrobüs, Marmaray and ferry services.
