Istanbul newborn gang investigation fallout

Overview

The investigation into the ‘Newborn Gang’ in Istanbul has led to the closure of several healthcare institutions and the revocation of licenses for involved hospitals and companies.

Following the investigation, which began in 2023 and resulted in the detention of 47 suspects in April 2024, the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) has begun the process of selling assets transferred to its management. This includes the sale of Esenler Güney Hospital, with an estimated value of 200 million lira. Other institutions under TMSF management include Doğa Hospital, TRG Hospitalist, and several others.

Recent footage from a closed hospital in Esenler revealed that facilities have been left inactive for nearly two years, containing abandoned medical equipment such as neonatal incubators, medicines, and surgical supplies. The interior of the building, including operating rooms and intensive care units, reportedly remains largely as it was left at the time of closure.
