Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport growth
Overview
In the first half of 2026, ACI Europe reported that Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport increased passenger traffic by 6.4%, ranking it among Europe’s fastest-growing large airports. While overall European traffic rose 2.6% year-on-year, the pace slowed in the second quarter due to the Middle East war, higher jet-fuel costs, and airline capacity cuts.
August 2026 saw a series of consecutive operational milestones. On 2 August, the airport recorded 919 flights and 174,325 passengers. This was followed by a record on 9 August, which handled 935 flights and 179,789 passengers. HEAŞ General Manager Faruk Kacır noted these records demonstrate the airport’s “operational capacity and passenger trust.”
A new historical peak was reached on 16 August, when the airport served 180,914 passengers across 958 flights. This milestone included record-breaking volumes for international arrivals, departures, and domestic traffic, as well as a peak of 218 aircraft serviced via passenger boarding bridges. Managing Director Hanita Ahmad stated that surpassing the 180,000 passenger threshold indicates “strong demand and operational capability” as the airport pursues its vision to become a regional transfer hub.
Monthly data for July 2026 showed the airport served 4,489,072 passengers, with international travel accounting for approximately 54% of the volume. During the same period, Pegasus Airlines reported an 8% increase in passenger numbers for July 2026, carrying 4.27 million passengers. For the first seven months of 2026, the airline carried 24.64 million passengers, a 4% increase compared to the previous year.
