ISWAP defections and surrenders in Nigeria

Overview

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has experienced a series of defections and surrenders to Nigerian military forces in Borno State.

In late July 2026, a senior finance operative responsible for the ISWAP enclave at Jubillaram surrendered to troops along the Gamboru–Wulgo supply route, turning in weapons, cash, and two children. The Nigerian army attributed a recent wave of approximately 46 defections to sustained land and air offensives conducted under Operation HADIN KAI.

By late August 2026, further surrenders occurred in the Mafa Local Government Area, where 24 family members, including women and children, fled enclaves due to violent internal clashes between rival terrorist factions. During this period, Nigerian troops and the Civilian Joint Task Force also conducted raids in Maiduguri and Damboa, resulting in the arrest of suspects and a suspected logistics supplier.
