Itabirito football club restructuring and relocation

Overview

The Itabirito football club has undergone significant changes regarding its competitive performance and organizational structure.

In early September 2026, the women’s team, known as Gatas do Mato, advanced to the final of the Campeonato Brasileiro Feminino Série A2 after a 4-0 victory against Minas Brasília. This followed a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the semifinals.

By late September, the club announced a major restructuring. Starting in the 2027 season, Itabirito Futebol Clube will relocate its headquarters to Varginha in southern Minas Gerais and rename itself Minas do Sul. This transition is part of a partnership with the Varginha City Hall and a Football Corporation (SAF). The new project aims to maintain a men’s team in the top tier of the Campeonato Mineiro, establish a women’s team for the Brazilian Championship Série A, and develop youth categories. The club will utilize the Dilzon Melo Municipal Stadium, referred to as ‘o Melão’, while incorporating the history of the original club into the new Minas do Sul identity.
