Italian 2026 sports championships
Overview
In July 2026 Italy’s regional track‑cycling scene was highlighted by the Lombardy championships at Milan’s Vigorelli velodrome, where Fabio Pisarra and Emma Bicelli won the Omnium, and by the Emilia‑Romagna meet in Cento, where Luca Pavani claimed the speed title. A few weeks later the national Italian Championships took place in Meda (24‑26 July), featuring senior athletes across multiple clubs and recording detailed all‑around scores. Concurrently, the Italian junior short‑track speed‑skating program began its first summer training camp at the Bormio Technical Centre (17‑24 August), selecting 21 young skaters under national coaches. In early August the Italian Junior Track Cycling Championships were held at the Velodromo Enzo Sacchi in Florence (4‑6 August). Regional teams from Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia‑Romagna, Piemonte and other areas contested Madison, team sprint, keirin, omnium and pursuit races across beginner, junior and senior categories. Notable winners included Viola Zambelli (women’s team pursuit, Lombardy), the Veneto trio of Vanessa Bacchin, Marta Grassi and Giorgia Timis (women’s team sprint), Leonardo Manfredi (men’s team sprint, Emilia‑Romagna) and Thomas Vitaloni and Margherita Donanzan (omnium titles). The following day the Florence Youth Cycling Championships concluded with a protest that drew attention. In the women’s Madison final, Lombardy riders Emma Cocca and Nina Marinini removed their silver medals from the podium, incurring a €50 fine each and prompting debate over protest in sport. Veneto athletes dominated the medal table, with Giorgia Timis winning both the team sprint and individual sprint, Giorgia Guidolin taking the esordienti Madison title, Mattia Daniele claiming the keirin crown, and Matilde Carretta also reaching the Madison podium. By August 7, reports confirmed that the controversy in the women's Madison race stemmed from a jury decision that awarded the title to Teodora Castelli and Ginevra Sambi, leading to the protest by Cocca and Marinini.
