Italian agricultural machinery safety initiatives

Overview

In early October 2026, Italian agricultural stakeholders convened at the National Council for Economics and Labour (CNEL) to address high rates of serious and fatal accidents involving farm machinery. Data presented indicated that Italy possesses one of the oldest agricultural machinery fleets in the EU, with an average age of nearly 30 years. Out of 2.15 million tractors, approximately 1.2 million lack integrated seat belts and 670,000 lack anti-rollover systems.

To combat an average of over 130 deaths per year—with Federacma noting that nearly 75 percent of these fatalities are caused by the overturning or crushing of machinery—associations proposed a structural safety plan. Federacma’s proposal includes a 350 million euro investment over five years, specifically requesting 70 million euros annually from 2027 to 2031 for scrapping obsolete equipment, alongside 25 million euros annually for modernizing recoverable machinery.

Beyond equipment renewal, the strategy aims to establish a qualified network of at least 500 workshops to support the sector through specialized technician training. Stakeholders, including COPAGRI President Tommaso Battista, emphasized that overcoming political stagnation regarding mandatory machinery inspections is essential for improving both worker safety and environmental sustainability.
