Italian Anti-Mafia Commission investigations and warnings

Overview

Chiara Colosimo, President of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, has addressed both historical investigations and the modern evolution of organized crime in Italy.

Regarding historical inquiries, Colosimo noted that undiscovered details remain concerning the 1992 and 1993 massacres. She highlighted unexpected findings in documents from Paolo Borsellino’s office that remained open following the Via D’Amelio bombing. The Commission is currently in the final drafting process for its report on the Capaci and Via D’Amelio massacres.

On the subject of modern criminal activity, Colosimo warned of a “genetic mutation” in organized crime. She observed that criminal groups are increasingly utilizing social media for recruitment, communication, and money laundering. This digital presence allows for “proselytism,” where groups project images of extreme wealth to appeal to youth in regions where state presence is weak.

Additionally, during a visit to Palermo, Colosimo called for political leaders to maintain ethical standards and institutional integrity, particularly in light of judicial developments involving alleged corruption and the former Vice President of the Sicilian Region, Gaetano Armao. She defended the Commission’s autonomy to investigate links between organized crime and public contracts.
