Italian bar license suspensions for public safety

Overview

Italian authorities have implemented several license suspensions for bars across different regions following incidents of violence and criminal activity.

In mid-September, authorities in Aci Sant’Antonio suspended a bar for seven days because it served as a frequent gathering point for individuals with criminal records, including those linked to drug trafficking and mafia-related offenses. Simultaneously, a bar in Rome’s Casilina area received a 15-day suspension following a violent brawl involving an attempted stabbing.

By early October, a bar in Busto Arsizio received a 15-day license suspension following a September 20 incident where a group attacked a man with stones, an act that also endangered a couple with a stroller. On October 3, a bar in Rovato was ordered to close for 15 days by the Questore of Brescia following a violent brawl that required law enforcement to use pepper spray.

On October 15, further suspensions were issued in Savona and Cremona. In Savona, the Questore suspended a food and beverage license for seven days following repeated police interventions regarding violence and the presence of individuals with criminal records. Incidents included a physical altercation between two women over slot machine use. In Cremona, the Bonis bar on via Palestro received a nine-day suspension after investigations revealed the venue frequently hosted patrons with criminal histories and served alcohol to minors, including a 16-year-old who required hospitalization due to excessive consumption.
