Italian Coast Guard cruise ship medical rescues

Overview

The Italian Coast Guard has conducted separate medical evacuations of cruise ship passengers in Italian waters.

In early September 2026, the Coast Guard intercepted the cruise ship AIDAcosma approximately 25 nautical miles off Civitavecchia to rescue a Hungarian woman who had suffered a stroke. The patient was transferred to a patrol boat and taken to a local hospital.

Later in the month, the Coast Guard responded to an emergency 55 miles off the coast of Pescara involving a 74-year-old passenger suffering from hepatic and renal failure and a suspected internal hemorrhage. This operation utilized both a patrol boat and a helicopter to transport the patient to a hospital in Chieti.
